The Year the Trading Day Broke Open

Four structural changes landed in twelve months. Together they bring more traders to the same instruments, at more hours of the day.

THE CHANGES

  • Nasdaq plans a Night Session, 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, targeted for Sunday, December 6, 2026. Trading would run from 9 p.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Friday with a one-hour industry-wide pause daily. The launch remains subject to securities information processor readiness and applicable SEC rule changes. (Sources: Nasdaq Global Trading Hours; SEC File No. SR-Nasdaq-2025-109)
  • The pattern day trader rule is gone. FINRA adopted intraday margin standards replacing the day-trading margin requirements, effective June 4, 2026. There is no 25,000 dollar minimum equity requirement and no pattern day trader designation based on counting trades. Firms may phase in implementation through October 20, 2027. • Same-day expiry became the market default. Cboe lists daily expirations across SPX, XSP and Dow Jones index options. In the first quarter of 2026, 0DTE represented 50.11 percent of all index options volume on Cboe. (Source: Cboe)
  • Single-stock options hours extended to a 7:30 a.m. ET pre-market session for select names. (Source: Cboe)

WHAT IT MEANS

Same-day expiry is already half of Cboe index options volume. A night session and the end of the pattern day trader floor bring more participants, at more hours, to that same instrument. The wider access and the added crowding come from the same change.
